GREENSBORO, N.C. – Gardner-Webb baseball was one of 32 NCAA Division I teams honored with the inaugural ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award for 2015-2016.
The award caps an outstanding overall year for the program, which finished in a tie for second place in the 2016 Big South Conference regular season standings and won a Division I era record 37 games.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were the only Big South Conference squad on the list, as head coach Rusty Stroupe's team combined to forge a GPA of 3.23 for the 2015-2016 academic year.
First baseman Patrick Graham was one of the stars on the field and in the books, earning second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in June after graduating with a 3.91 cumulative GPA. Graham was also named Big South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year following the 2016 season.
The recipients of the 2015-2016 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award each had a team GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes.
The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/Diamond Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award.
