BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb survived to take a 10-9 win over Campbell in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afteroon, before dropping a 7-2 decision to the Camels in the nightcap.
The Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 11-14 overall and 1-2 in Big South play while Campbell improve to 11-13 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Campbell scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would hang on to claim a 10-9 victory in the opening game today's doubleheader.
Trailing 10-5 headed into the final inning, the Camels got a two-run home run by Michael Barefoot with one out to pull within three runs. A pair of singles followed to force GWU to bring in closer Wil Sellers from the bullpen.
Sellers would strike out the first batter he faced, but a wild pitch and RBI single would pull Campbell within one run at 10-9 with two outs.
Sellers would end the game when the following batter would fly out to center field.
Gardner-Webb took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of errors by Campbell to score four runs.
GWU would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, as Mason Fox would score on a throwing error by catcher Zach Minnick, who attempted to throw Fox out at third as he attempted to steal the base.
Gardner-Webb had 11 base hits, led by Collin Thacker who was 3-for-4 with two doubles, driving in three runs while scoring twice. Danny Sullivan (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) and Fox (2-for-4, 2-runs) also collected multiple hits.
Campbell was led at the plate by Jeff Hahs, who went 3-for-4, including two home runs. The Camels had 10 base hits throughout the game.
Jarrett Thompson earned his first win of the season in 2.0 innings of relief, allowing four runs with one strikeout. Starter Bradley Hallman lasted 6.1 innings, allowing four runs. Sellers recorded the final two outs to earn his third save of the season.
Wes Noble took the loss for Campbell, giving up the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning. Starter Alex Yarhem went 6.0 innings, allowing four runs with two strikeouts.
Campbell plated four runs in the top of the fourth inning to cruise to a 7-2 win in the second game of today's doubleheader.
The Camels would lead off the fourth with back-to-back home runs by Cole Hallum and Kevin Barron to take a 2-1 lead with no outs.
A RBI base hit by Adam Wyse and a sacrifice fly by Matthew Barefoot would drive in two additional runs to give Campbell a 4-1 lead after four innings.
The Camels would tack on solo runs in the fifth, seventh, and ninth innings to seal the game.
Gardner-Webb would take an early lead in the bottom of the second inning, as Danny Sullivan would hit his fifth home run of the season to lead off the frame.
Gardner-Webb would have seven hits in the nightcap, led by Thacker and Sullivan, who each had two base knocks.
Campbell tallied 12 base hits, led by Barron who was 4-for-5 on the evening.
Isaac Campbell took the loss for GWU in 4.0 innings of work, allowing four runs with three strikeouts.
Ryan Kirk earned the win for the Camels, hurling 6.0 innings with three strikeouts while allowing just one run.
Gardner-Webb starts a four-game road swing on Wednesday evening, traveling to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm.
