Diamond ‘Dogs to Host UNC Asheville To Wrap Up Regular Season

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb baseball team will wrap up the 2017 regular season this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs host UNC Asheville for the final Big South Conference series of the year.

Gardner-Webb (22-27, 9-12 Big South) will look to end the regular season on a positive note after dropping its last eight contests, with six of them being by two runs or less.

Collin Thacker continues to lead GWU at the plate with a .354 batting average, leading the team with 69 base hits including 13 doubles and six home runs.  He has also driven in 40 runs throughout the season. Danny Sullivan continues to show power at the plate, leading the Big South with 16 home runs, which is tied for the most all-time in a single season in GWU history, and a Big South best .633 slugging percentage.

Bradley Hallman has been a consistent bright spot in the Gardner-Webb pitching rotation throughout the year with a 3.35 ERA in 86.0 innings of work.  The right-handed junior has fanned 47 batters while issuing 22 walks.

Freshman Landon Mitchell has excelled since joining the starting rotation midway through the year.  Against Big South opponents, he has a 2.22 ERA, allowing just six earned runs in 24.1 innings of work with 11 strikeouts. 

UNC Asheville (22-28, 10-11 Big South) enters the weekend after taking two of three against Longwood this past weekend and earning a 6-4 win over ETSU this past Tuesday night. 

Joe Tietjen paces the Bulldogs offensively, batting .274 overall with 10 doubles, seven home runs, and 30 RBI.

Spencer Orr leads Asheville on the mound with a 3.52 ERA, allowing 27 earned runs in 69.0 innings of work with 64 strikeouts.

The series opens on Thursday evening at 5:00 pm, and will continue Friday at 6:00 pm and Saturday at 2:00 pm.  Prior to Saturday's game, the Gardner-Webb baseball program will recognize its senior class of Thacker, Sullivan, Paul Trick, Matt Simmons, and Gage Parham.  The Senior Day festivities will begin at approximately 1:40 pm.
