@GWUFootball Linebacker Jeffrey Pegues Earns Honorable Mention STATS FCS National Defensive Honor

NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Gardner-Webb inside linebacker Jeffrey Pegues was named to the honorable mention STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Week list Monday afternoon, following his best performance of the season.

Pegues (Charlotte, N.C. / Mallard Creek HS) tied his season-high with eight total tackles (six solo) and posted a career-high 2.5 sacks in Gardner-Webb's 23-20 overtime loss at Liberty.

The 6-0, 208-pound junior stepped up to lead a stiff defensive effort for Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon. Pegues teamed up with freshman Davis Neilands on a sack in the first quarter, bringing down the Flames' quarterback for a nine-yard loss on 3rd-and-18 to force a punt.

He put the Flames behind the chains early in the second quarter as well, dropping the quarterback for another nine-yard loss on first down. His third quarter sack was also a solo job that pushed Liberty back seven yards into a 3rd-and-20 situation.

Pegues had three tackles on third down that kept Liberty from converting – including two stops in that category in the third quarter. He helped key a GWU pass rush that recorded a season-high five sacks in the game and eight tackles behind the line.

Gardner-Webb limited the Flames to 291 total yards, their first game below the 300-yard mark in the month of October.

Pegues is enjoying a very solid season at linebacker, ranking third on the team with a career-best 49 total tackles (30 solo). Pegues has added 3.5 sacks (career-high), 4.5 tackles for loss (career-high), one forced fumble and a pass break up for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb faces another difficult road test this weekend, traveling to play No. 8 Charleston Southern on Saturday at Noon. The game will air live on the American Sports Network (ASN), with Mike Hogewood and Renaldo Wynn calling the action. Check local listings for availability.
