@GWUFootball Linebacker Chad Geter Added To 2016 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List

NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Gardner-Webb outside linebacker Chad Geter was one of seven FCS defensive standouts added to the 2016 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List Wednesday afternoon.

The Buchanan Award is given annually to the defensive player of the year in the FCS. Previous Gardner-Webb defenders to appear on the Buchanan Watch List include O.J. Mau (2014, 2015), Shaquille Riddick (5th, 2013), Jeffery Williams (2009), Mario Brown (2008), Brian Johnston (7th, 2007) and Mario Williams (2004).

Geter (Irmo, S.C. / Dutch Fork HS) has lived up to considerable expectations in his final season with the Runnin' Bulldogs. He currently leads the Big South Conference and ranks No. 11 nationally with 106 total tackles (61 solo) and 10.6 tackles per game. He has added 7.5 tackles for loss and a sack – and has been active and effective in pass coverage.

The 6-foot-2, 253-pound graduate student has helped Gardner-Webb to the conference lead in scoring defense (21.8 ppg).

Geter has been at his best in Gardner-Webb's three games against nationally-ranked teams, averaging 12.3 tackles in those contests. The Runnin' Bulldogs have performed admirably in those games as a result, with two close losses to The Citadel and Coastal Carolina followed by a 17-10 win over No. 8 Charleston Southern on November 5.

Geter has posted 333 career tackles in 46 games played, which ranks No. 8 in Big South Conference history and No. 10 in Gardner-Webb history.

He led GWU with 92 total tackles last season, earning All-Big South Conference honors for the second time in his career. That performance landed Geter on the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team (3rd) heading into the 2016 season.

Geter was also named to the 2017 Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List in August. He graduated from Gardner-Webb in May, 2016 with a sports management degree – and is currently pursuing his MBA at Gardner-Webb.

Geter joins quarterback Tyrell Maxwell (Walter Payton Award) and cornerback Jaylan Foster (Jerry Rice Award) on watch lists for three of the FCS top awards this season. It marks the first time in program history that Gardner-Webb has placed one player on each of the three lists in the same season.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will close out the regular season on November 19 vs. Monmouth (1:30 pm).
