BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb tight end Mike Estes will embark on a quest to make an NFL roster on the west coast, accepting a mini-camp tryout invitation from the Los Angeles Chargers.
Estes (Raleigh, N.C. / Athens Drive HS) joins Chad Geter (San Francisco 49ers) as Gardner-Webb graduates to receive tryouts with NFL teams this spring.
Nine former Gardner-Webb student-athletes have a signed an NFL free agent contract or earned a mini-camp tryout over the last eight years.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Estes finished his career as the greatest tight end in Big South Conference history, catching a league position-record 122 passes for 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns.
He was a three-time All-Big South Conference selection, earning first-team honors in 2015 and 2016. He was a second-team All-Big South choice as a redshirt freshman in 2013.
This past season, Estes caught a team and career-best 41 passes for 494 yards and a pair of scores – leading the Big South's tight ends in catches for the third time in his career.
One of his touchdowns was the game-winner in Gardner-Webb's 17-10 win at No. 8 Charleston Southern in November, a catch that came in the final minute of the game to break a 10-10 tie.
Estes graduated from Gardner-Webb with his undergraduate degree in December, 2015, and enrolled in pursuit of his MBA the following semester at GWU.
