Men's Soccer Falls, 2-1, On Late Goal At Longwood Monday In Big South Duel

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood scored on an own goal in the 83rd minute Monday night to slip past Gardner-Webb, 2-1, in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

The match was a makeup from a meeting previously scheduled for October 8 and postponed due to weather.

Gardner-Webb (4-8-0, 1-3-0 Big South) took a lead early in the second half, as David Koloko got free with a feed from Severin Soerlie with 46:30 on the clock. Koloko unleashed his chance into the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead.

It was Koloko's third goal of the season.

Longwood (5-8-1, 2-3-0 Big South) finally got the equalizer in the 72nd minute, with Finnlay Wyatt heading home an assist from Max Poelker to knot the match at 1-1 (71:54).

Neither team could find the net again, until the decisive own goal late (85:21) provided the winning margin for the Lancers.

Gardner-Webb held a 16-13 edge in shots, and put nine of those chances on frame – compared to only four shots on frame all evening from the Lancers. Each team had three corner kicks and the foul-heavy match saw the two sides combine for 22 fouls and five yellow cards.

Soerlie had four shots for the Runnin' Bulldogs, with Magnus Moldjord putting his foot to three shots (one on frame). Four more GWU players had two shots each in the match – including Koloko.

Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Friday night, hosting Liberty at 7:00 pm at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
