BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb men's tennis announced a five-man recruiting class Thursday, a group that includes three international student-athletes and two from the United States.
The Runnin' Bulldogs added Ross Gilbert (Bath, United Kingdom), Jeremiah Hansen (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Breno Souza Plentz (Porto Alegre, Brazil), Stefano Puga (Trujilo, Peru) and Jacob Wall (Mint Hill, N.C.).
"This is the largest incoming class since I've been coaching here, but we had to replace four of our top-six singles players," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We added two lefties in the class and these are players who are driven. Their best tennis is ahead of them."
Gilbert graduated from St. Laurence School and holds an LTA rating of 2.1 – with #51 his highest U18 ranking in the United Kingdom.
Hansen graduated from Colorado Springs Christian High and is the recipient of an ROTC scholarship. He is currently the #6 ranked player in Colorado.
Plentz graduated from Colegio Joao Paulo and holds a national ranking of #14 in the Brazilian U18 classification.
Puga, a southpaw, graduated from San Jose Obero Marianista in Peru and has a strong U18 ranking of #3 in that country.
Wall, also a lefty, graduated from Covenant Day School near Charlotte. A member of the National Honor Society, Wall led his team to a runner up finish in the state high school finals in 2016.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are coming off a solid spring campaign that saw the team finish fourth in the Big South Conference regular season standings.
Gardner-Webb opens its 2016 fall season on September 9 at UNC Wilmington.
