CARY, N.C. – Gardner-Webb's Paul Hogan and Maximillian Scholl competed well at the 2016 ITA Regionals hosted by Duke University, with Scholl advancing to the round of 32 in a 128-man draw.
Scholl picked up a win over UNC Greensboro's Marcus Vidgren in his opening match, winning 6-4, 7-5. He then made quick work of Presbyterian's Brandon Mills – winning 6-4, 6-2 – to advance to the round of 32.
He engaged in a grueling match with North Carolina's Bo Boyden on Saturday morning, winning the first set (6-4), but dropping a tough 7-6(1) set as Boyden drew even. Scholl battled again in the decisive third set and had two-straight match points, but Boyden survived for a 7-5 win to advance.
Hogan dropped his opening singles match to Elon's Mario Paccini (6-0, 6-1), but he and Scholl were victorious in a doubles win over Campbell – winning 7-6(2), 6-4. The duo had another long battle with Furman, falling 7-6(4), 6-4 as the Paladins' pair advanced.
"This was disappointing, but a learning experience," said head coach Mike Griffith. "When you have opportunities you have to finish. We are learning to be winners and it takes the type of commitment – extra time and effort – you need to be winners and champions at the highest level. We have the talent, no question."
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on October 28 at the Charlotte 49ers Fall Invitational.
