DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team dropped its season opener Wednesday, falling by a 7-0 score in a road match to Davidson at the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-1) got an impressive 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles from the team of Johan Fors and Ross Gilbert, but the Wildcats (2-1) rallied for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles and took a 6-2 decision at No. 2 doubles to claim the point.
"We had early momentum in doubles, but Davidson fought back and took it to us," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We were up 3-0 at No. 1 doubles. I am confident we will improve a great deal from our first match to the second match of the season. We are really looking forward to the next one.
Hogan engaged in an epic battle at No. 2 singles, winning the first set by a 6-4 margin before falling 6-4 in the second set to Davidson's David Hager. The two went back-and-forth in a lengthy third set, with Hager eventually finishing on the right side of a 15-13 score to win the battle.
Gilbert dropped a pair of competitive 6-4 sets at No. 5 singles in his first spring match as a collegiate player.
Gardner-Webb will hit the road again next Tuesday, traveling to face Wofford on January 31 in Spartanburg. That match is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
