BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb dropped its Big South Conference opener Wednesday afternoon, falling by a 5-2 score to Presbyterian.

The match was the sixth in seven days for the Runnin' Bulldogs (4-6, 0-1 Big South).

"PC took it to us in doubles and deserved that point, but we did not back down and had chances," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We are improving and the guys are doing all the extra things to get better."

The Blue Hose (6-5, 1-0 Big South) captured all three doubles matches to pick up that point and took wins in the first two singles matches that were completed – jumping out to a 3-0 team lead with four matches remaining.

Breno Plentz got the Runnin' Bulldogs in the win column, taking a 6-2, 6-4 win over Joel Roberts at No. 6 singles – cutting the Blue Hose lead to 3-1. No. 1 singles player and reigning Big South Conference Freshman of the Year Maximilian Scholl followed suit, taking down Alexander Lykou for a hard-fought win (6-1, 3-6, 6-0).

The Blue Hose would pull out the win, however, as Alejandro Bejar rallied from an early deficit to take a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Stefano Puga at No. 4 singles to clinch the match. Brandon Mills added a win at No. 2 singles in the final battle of the day.

Gardner-Webb will hit the road as it continues Big South Conference play, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C., on Saturday to take on Winthrop. The match is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
