CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb sophomore Maximilian Scholl was named Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week Wednesday afternoon, as selected by the league office.
Scholl (Stuttgart, Germany) continued to play at a high level for the Runnin' Bulldogs, going a perfect 2-0 in No. 1 singles action last week and 1-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Scholl posted each of his singles wins in straight sets, including a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 win over Liberty's Vince Salas on Saturday to help sew up a 4-3 team win over the Flames. Scholl also teamed with Breno Plentz in doubles play against Liberty, taking a 7-6 (1) win in that match.
He also picked up a 6-1, 6-4 vs. South Carolina State in a non-conference match last week and improved his overall mark to 13-3 this spring (4-1 Big South). The 2016 Big South Conference Freshman of the Year has won five singles bouts in a row and is 8-2 in his last 10.
Scholl is now 27-9 in singles play – all in the No. 1 flight – during his career at Gardner-Webb. That includes a dominant 11-2 mark against Big South Conference foes.
Gardner-Webb (8-11, 3-2 Big South) hosts Campbell in a key league matchup on Thursday, March 30, at 3:00 pm in Boiling Springs.
