CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb dropped both ends of its Saturday softball doubleheader at Charleston Southern, falling 5-0 in the opening game and 7-3 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE – Charleston Southern 5, Gardner-Webb 0
Charleston Southern's Cheyenne Gandara fired a one-hit shutout to lead the Buccaneers to a 5-0 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon in the first of a three-game series.

It snapped a two-game win streak for the Runnin' Bulldogs (9-19, 2-1 Big South).

The Bucs (15-21) took a 1-0 lead in the first and Gandara made that hold up the rest of the way.

The Runnin' Bulldogs did get a base runner on board in the first, and two on in the fifth via walks, but Gandara held a no hitter into the sixth – when red-hot Megan Gibbons came through with a two-out double. Gandara struck out the next batter, and gave way to Arizona Pilgrim for the seventh inning.

Jade Gandara powered Charleston Southern offensively, belting a three-run home run in the third to strengthen the lead. She drove home the run in the first inning on a ground ball out as well.

Caitlyn Emberson supplied a solo home run in the fifth for the final margin.

Charleston Southern had 10 hits in the game, with Mallory Kasinger (2-for-3) and Lexie Vanada (2-for-3) joined by six other hitters with one knock each.

Summer Darnell (1-5) took the loss in the circle for Gardner-Webb, allowing four runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of work. Olivia Henson came on to pitch the final 4.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits.

GAME TWO – Charleston Southern 7, Gardner-Webb 3
Gardner-Webb rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, but could not catch Charleston Southern in a 7-0 loss in the final game of Saturday's twinbill.

The Bucaneers (16-21) got a two-run home run from Jade Gandara in the fourth inning to stretch an early 1-0 lead, then scored four runs – two on another Jade Gandara long ball – in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Gardner-Webb (9-20, 2-2 Big South) mounted its rally in the seventh, getting a one-out single from Rachel Cumiskey to get things going. Megan Gibbons followed with an RBI double, driving home Kaylee Wacaster and Callie Thornton plated Cumiskey with a ground ball to shortstop.

Alia Booth singled home Gibbons to trim the lead to 7-3, but the Buccaneers overcame a pair of walks to get a ground ball to strand the bases loaded.

Holly Clark (6-5) picked up the win for Charleston Southern, working all 7.0 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. She pitched around five walks on the day.

Amanda Matsumoto (2-fo-3), Stevi Johnson (2-3) and Jade Gandara (2-for-3, 2 HR, 5 RBI) led Charleston Southern's seven-hit attack. Jade Gandara finished the twinbill with three home runs and nine RBI at the plate.

Mackenzie Thompson (2-9) took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings. She struck out two.

Cumiskey (2-for-3) and Booth (2-for-4, RBI) each had multiple hits for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Annamarie Warley (1-for-4, 3B) and Gibbons (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) had the lone extra base hits for the 'Dogs.

The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
