FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood took both ends of Saturday's Big South Conference softball doubleheader, topping Gardner-Webb by matching 8-0 scores.

GAME ONE – Longwood 8, Gardner-Webb 0
Longwood used a three-run burst in the bottom of the fifth to open up a tight game and got a two-run single from Jordan Clark in the bottom of the sixth to cut the game short, 8-0.

The Lancers (13-20, 2-5 Big South) used 11 hits on the day and took advantage of a lone error by the Runnin' Bulldogs (11-23, 4-5 Big South).

Longwood jumped in front early, getting back-to-back solo home runs from Kaylynn Batten and Glenn Walters to go up 2-0 in the first. An RBI single from Justina Augustine in the second moved the lead to 3-0, but neither team would scratch again until the Lancers' big fifth inning.

Batten was the big bat again, belting a three-run home run to follow two singles that led off the frame – giving Longwood a 6-0 lead that would prove to be too much to overcome.

Gardner-Webb had a golden chance itself in the top of the first, getting a leadoff walk from Kaylee Wacaster and another with two outs to Alia Booth – but both were stranded by a ground ball out. The 'Dogs had two more on board in the second after singles from Annamarie Warley and Maddi Johnson to lead off the inning, but a pair of strikeouts and a fly ball left both on base.

Sydney Gay (10-10) picked up the win for Longwood, hurling 5.0 shutout frames with only three hits allowed. Sydney Mundell pitched a scoreless sixth for the Lancers.

Batten went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four RBI for Longwood, with Augustine (3-for-4) also enjoying a standout game at the plate.

Gardner-Webb got hits from Booth (1-for-2, BB), Warley (1-for-3) and Johnson (1-for-1) in the game.

Mackenzie Thompson (3-10) took the loss in the circle, scattering five hits and allowing three runs in 2.0 innings of work. Ashley Wark came on to pitch the final 3.2 frames, allowing five runs on six hits.

GAME TWO – Longwood 8, Gardner-Webb 0
Longwood's Elizabeth McCarthy tossed a 6.0 inning no hitter in Saturday's nightcap, as the Lancers took an 8-0 win over Gardner-Webb.

McCarthey (4-6) struck out nine and was one walk away from a perfect game. She faced one batter over the minimum.

The Lancers (14-20, 3-5 Big South) got a two-run home run from Glenn Walters – her second long ball in as many games – in the top of the first to take control very early once again.

A two-run single from Kaylynn Batten sparked a three-run burst in the second inning and a sacrifice fly from Jordan Clark pushed the lead to 5-0. A solo home run from Kelsey Sweeney in the third made it 6-0 in Longwood's favor, and the Lancers wrapped the win up early with two more runs in the sixth.

The Lancers had nine hits in the game, with eight different batters doing the honors. Batten (2-for-3, 2 RBI) led the way for the second game in a row.

Summer Darnell (1-8) took the loss for Gardner-Webb (11-24, 4-6 Big South), allowing four earned runs on five hits in 2.0 innings pitched. She struck out two and walked one.

Olivia Henson came on to work the final 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

The two teams will play the series finale on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm in Farmville.
