Gardner-Webb Men's Swimming Tops SCAD, 119-86, To Win 2016-2017 Season Opener

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Gardner-Webb came alive in Saturday's season opener to take a 119-86 win over Savannah College of Art & Design.

The meet was originally scheduled for October 7, but was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew.

"Our men ran into the defending NAIA National Champions and had to get tough in the second half today's meet," said head coach Mike Simpson. "The 100 back was the event that changed results, with Bos, Linzie and Wakeley sweeping the top three. Connor [Bos] won three events today with the 50 free, 100 back and 400 medley relay. Jordan Mintz won his first college race in the 100 breast and both Andrew Linzie and Mason Hutchinson anchored the free relay to a nice come from behind win. It was a total team effort. Our depth was huge today."

The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out to win the 400 medley relay, with the quartet of Bos, Mintz, Andrew Knudsen and Cameron Pou nipping the SCAD team by a hundredth (3:34.58) for the win.

After three-straight individual wins by the hosts, Bos came through with a gritty win in the 50 free (21.54), edging Anton Arvidsson by three hundredths of a second.

After SCAD took wins in the 200 IM, 100 fly and 100 free the trio of Bos, Linzie and Wakeley turned the tide – literally – sweeping the 100 back event. Bos touched with a time of 51.42, with Linzie (53.41) and Wakeley (54.22) finishing close behind.

Mints picked up a big win in the 100 breast (59.22) and the 200 free relay team of Zach Dingfield, Hal McKay, Linzie and Mason Hutchinson won by a tenth of a second with a time of 1:26.54 to cap the season opener in style.

Gardner-Webb will continue its early season trek to the First Coast, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., to face North Florida and Florida Atlantic on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 22).
