BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb women's swimming split Friday's home opener, topping UNC Asheville (151-53) and falling to Campbell (105.5-98.5) to start a busy weekend of action.
"I'm so proud of our women for fighting back time and time again," said head coach Mike Simpson. "We dug an early hole by losing the medley relay, but Lauren Oglesby and Morgan Vanderschaff brought us back with great swims in the 1,000. London [Schumacher] had a strong win in the 200 IM and Lara Siebrecht had her first college win in the 100 back. Lauren also won a tough 500 free race, and I'm very proud of how she bounced back from a tough sophomore season to get two key wins for us.
"Lili Toth and Whitney Peters gave us a chance to win the meet with some tough racing in the 100 breast. Have to give the Camels credit for putting together a tough last free relay to beat us. We knew we had to be first and third in that relay to pull it out. Our ladies responded every time we needed them to. It was a very exciting atmosphere and a great college meet to be a part of. We beat UNCA and had some great races with them also. It was a fun meet with a loud and electric crowd."
Gardner-Webb picked up wins in four of the 11 events Friday and posted second-place finishes in five other events.
Lauren Oglesby was strong in the distance events, winning the 1,000 free with a time of 10:24.01 and also touching the wall first in the 500 free (5:09.57).
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday morning, traveling to Charlotte, N.C., to take on Queens (N.C.) University.
