NORFOLK, Va. – Both Gardner-Webb swim teams were among a record number nationally to earn College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team honors.
The awards are given annually in recognition of teams that achieved a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Gardner-Webb women's team earned National Scholar Honor All-America honors as one of the top-25 GPAs nationally following the fall semester. Traditionally one of the strongest academic teams in the country, Gardner-Webb forged a 3.64 team GPA last fall to rank No. 6 nationally among NCAA Division I programs.
The success shouldn't come as a surprise, as 19 Gardner-Webb women earned academic All-Conference honors in 2015-2016. It marks the 18th consecutive season that GWU has been honored as an academic All-America team by the CSCAA.
The Gardner-Webb men earned academic All-America honors, forging a strong 3.17 GPA for the fall semester. The Runnin' Bulldogs have earned academic All-America honors in each of its seasons of competition, with the program starting up for the 2007-2008 season.
Last year, the Gardner-Webb men had 20 of its student-athletes earn academic All-Conference honors and 2016 graduate Nathan Lile was honored with the NCAA's prestigious Elite 90 Award – for earning the highest GPA among swimmers at last season's national meet. The GWU men have also featured the CCSA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each of the last three seasons.
The GWU teams will be back in the pool on Friday, January 27, traveling to Davidson for a two-day meet. The opening day of action begins at 6:00 pm on Friday.
