Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Fifth, Women Sixth after First Day of 2017 Big South Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. – After the opening day of the 2017 Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Gardner-Webb men's track and field team sits in fifth place while the women's squad sits in sixth place.

In the men's long jump, Jalin Lawson earned a third-place finish with a mark of 7.21 meters.  Lawson broke his previous career best mark of 6.99 meters set at the 2016 Charlotte Invitational and had the third-longest long jump in Gardner-Webb history

A.J. White placed fourth in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 48.42 meters.  Clay Hamilton finished seventh in the event with a toss of 41.79 meters, beating his previous personal best mark of 40.30 meters set at the 2017 Charlotte Invitational. 

Four events of the women's heptathlon took place on Wednesday, with Merideth Byl ranking in seventh with 2,765 points.  Taylor Hotchkiss is thirteenth with 2,411 points and Amanda Hall is fourteenth with 2,314 points.  Byl placed second in the shot put with a toss of 11.08 meters and first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.38 seconds.

Byl also took home a fourth place finish in the women's javelin with a distance of 38.91 meters, beating her previous best of 37.15 set at the 2016 Big South Championships. It was also the fourth-longest javelin throw in GWU history.

Cailen Blaire earned a tenth-place finish in the women's discus throw with a toss of 36.92 meters.

In the women's 400-meter hurdles preliminaries, Paige Peterson placed seventh with a time of 1:04.23 to qualify for the finals on Friday afternoon.  Peterson's previous personal record was 1:05.14, set earlier this year at the Duke Invitational.

Carlos Williams timed in at 22.24 in the men's 200-meter dash prelims to earn a spot in the finals on Friday.  That beat his previous best time in the event by tenth of a second, set at the Duke Invitational earlier this season 

In the men's 10,000-meter run, Keaton Poole place ninth with a time of 36:36.10. 

Liberty is currently the front-runner for both the men's and women's championships.
