Runnin’ Bulldogs Fall at Furman, 84-62, Wednesday Night

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Gardner-Webb had two scorers reach double figures, yet a hot-shooting performance by Furman resulted in the Runnin' Bulldogs falling to the Paladins by a score of 84-62 on Wednesday evening. 

Alexus Hill and Savannah Plentovich each had 11 points to lead Gardner-Webb (4-6) in scoring, as the team shot 33 percent for the evening from the floor.  Furman (5-9) shot 50 percent from the floor, as well as behind the three-point arc, and was led in scoring by Whitney Bunn with 29 points. 

Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early 5-3 lead to start the game after Celia Tibbs converted an and one opportunity with 9:03 on the clock, followed by a jumper by Alexus Hill with 8:45 remaining, but the Paladins would go on a 7-0 run to take control of the opening period.  The Runnin' Bulldogs would pull within two points at 12-10 after a three pointer by Kiera Currie with 4:05 remaining, but would finish the first period trailing by a score of 18-13. 

Furman would push its lead to seven points at 23-16 with 8:48 remaining in the second period, yet the Runnin' Bulldogs would fight back, scoring seven unanswered points over the next three minutes to tie the game at 23-23 after a three pointer from Tierra Huntsman with 5:41 on the clock.  GWU would claim a brief lead at 26-25 with 4:03 remaining after a three pointer from Evelyn Adebayo, yet Furman would then go on a 10-0 run to build a 35-26 lead with 1:28 to go in the half.  A pair of late free throws by Hill would set the margin at seven points at halftime with GWU trailing, 37-30. 

The Paladins would open the third period with a quick 5-0 run, pushing their lead to 42-30 with 8:10 remaining, which led to a Gardner-Webb timeout.  The Runnin' Bulldogs would score right out of the break as Currie would knock down another shot from long distance to pull within single digits at 42-33 with 8:03 to go.  Furman would go on to extend its lead to as high as 18 points with 4:01 on the clock, and would lead by that margin at the end of the frame, 66-48. 

Furman opened the final period of play with a 9-4 run to push its lead to a game-high 23 points at 75-52 with 6:41 on the clock, yet the Runnin' Bulldogs would respond with a pair of consecutive three pointers from Savannah Plentovich that led to a Furman timeout with 5:50 to go.  The Paladins would go on to take the contest by a final margin of 22 points, 84-62.
