BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb outscored Southern Wesleyan by 16 points over the final 16 minutes of play as the Runnin' Bulldogs earned a 82-62 victory on Friday night.
GWU (5-6) had four scorers reach double figures, led by Tierra Huntsman with 14 points. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 38.2 percent from the floor, while holding Southern Wesleyan (2-7) to a 30.6 percentage. Tatiyana Mahone led the Warriors offensively with 14 points.
Every member of the team that saw action for Gardner-Webb got on the scoreboard, with new career-highs for Carley Plentovich (12 points), Charlisa Jenkins (13 points), and Lovely Locklear (13 points).
The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the contest with a 7-2 run and would extend the lead to double digits following a layup from Celia Tibbs with 1:46 on the clock to set the score at 18-7. A pair of free throws by Huntsman with 58 seconds remaining in the period would be the final points of the frame, giving GWU a 20-8 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
Gardner-Webb would extend its lead to as high as 16 points in the second period after Evelyn Adebayo knocked down a jumper from downtown with 5:10 on the clock, yet Southern Wesleyan would chip away at the deficit to trail by 12 at the half, 40-28.
Huntsman would push GWU's lead back to 15 points in the opening minute of the third period, drilling a shot from long distance with 9:09 on the clock, but the Warriors would pull within eight points with 6:11 remaining in the quarter. Gardner-Webb would then score 10 unanswered points, capped by a layup from Ky'Asia Stanford with 4:00 to go, to lead 57-39. The Runnin' Bulldogs would expand the lead to 20 points with 2:53 remaining after a layup from Lovely Locklear and would lead by 17, 66-49, at the end of the period.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would score 12 unanswered points to start the final quarter of play, building a game-high 29 point lead following a three-pointer from Carley Plentovich with 4:25 on the clock. GWU would maintain a 20-plus point lead throughout the remainder of the final period, taking a 24 point victory with the final score of 86-62.
