Women's Basketball Drops 64-57 Decision at Charleston Southern Tuesday Night

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb had two players reach double figures in scoring, yet the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to Charleston Southern by a score of 65-57 in Big South Conference play on Tuesday evening.

Gardner-Webb (8-10, 3-4 Big South) was led in scoring by Alexus Hill with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, and Tierra Huntsman with 15 points on 6-of-13 scoring.  Charleston Southern (10-8, 4-3 Big South) had three players reach double-figures in scoring, let by Ke'Asia Jackson with 22 points.

Charleston Southern would open the game with a quick two unanswered baskets until Carley Plentovich would knock down the first of five made three-pointers for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the opening period with 7:42 on the clock.

The two teams would trade baskets over the next few possessions until Gardner-Webb would go on an 11-0 run to build a 20-10 lead with 1:21 remaining in the quarter.

GWU would lead by ten at the end of the period after Evelyn Adebayo scored a layup as time expired to set the score at 22-12.

CSU began the second period with a 6-2 run to pull within six points at 24-18 with 5:55 on the clock, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would respond with a 5-0 spurt to increase their lead to a game-high 11 points after a pair of free throws from Plentovich with 3:39 remaining.

The Buccaneers would then go on to score seven unanswered points to close the gap to four points, 29-25, with 1:51 remaining in the half.  Both teams would trade baskets over the next few trips down the floor, and GWU would lead by a score of 32-28 at the half.

Charleston Southern would begin the third period with a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead before Gardner-Webb would stop the run with 7:59 on the clock after Plentovich knocked down a jumper.  GWU would pull within one point on its next possession after a jumper from Hill with 7:28 remaining, yet CSU would expand its advantage to as high as 12 points at 53-41 with 2:09 to go in the quarter.

Huntsman would connect from long distance with 29 seconds to go in the period to set the score at 55-49 at the end of the third quarter.

GWU would slowly chip away at their deficit throughout the fourth period, pulling with in four points at 61-57 with 41 seconds remaining after a three-pointer from Hill. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs would be unable to pull any closer, as Charleston Southern would knock down late free throws to take the game by a final score of 64-57.

Gardner-Webb will return home on Saturday, January 28, hosting Campbell at 2:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena.  The contest will be broadcast on the Big South Network (www.bigsouthsports.com).
