Gardner-Webb Holds Off Winthrop For 63-57 Win In Big South Women's Basketball Action

BOILING SPRINGS – Tierra Huntsman scored 15 points to lead four players in double digits, as Gardner-Webb overcame a cool shooting game to beat Winthrop, 63-57, Saturday afternoon.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (11-14, 6-8 Big South) fell behind 18-12 after the first quarter, but used a 9-0 run to close the second quarter for a 34-28 lead at halftime. GWU outscored the Eagles (2-24, 1-13 Big South) by a 22-10 margin in the second quarter to seize control of the game.

Charlisa Jenkins scored 14 points and Kiera Currie joined Carley Plentovich with 10 points to supplement Huntsman's scoring.

Gardner-Webb shot 33.8 percent for the game (24-of-71), but scored 10 second-chance points off of 14 offensive boards. GWU also forced 14 turnovers in the game and held Winthrop to 34.5 percent shooting for the game – buckling down on defense after allowing the Eagles to shoot 50 percent in the first quarter.

Winthrop got a game-high 21 points from creative guard Erica Williams, who hit 9-of-18 shots, dished off five assists and pulled down four rebounds. Teylahana Green added nine rebounds and Angela Coello Perez added seven points and seven boards to help the Eagles hold a 45-43 edge on the glass.

The Eagles shot less than 30 percent in both the second and fourth quarter as Gardner-Webb built its lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs led by as many as 13 points midway through the fourth quarter before Winthrop made a late charge to pull within six.

There were only two made baskets in the final four minutes of regulation, a layup by Williams with 3:27 to play to pull the Eagles within 63-54 and a three-pointer by Williams with 28.3 seconds left that proved to be the final bucket of the game.

Huntsman scored 10 of her team-high 15 markers in the second half, making 4-of-5 free throws. In addition to their double figures scoring games, Jenkins and Currie each added eight rebounds. Celia Tibbs came off the bench to supply four points and seven boards – and guard Ky'Asia Stanford had seven boards as well.

The win for Gardner-Webb completed the season-sweep over Winthrop.
