Runnin’ Bulldogs Fall at First-Place Campbell, 67-56, Saturday Afternoon

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Gardner-Webb had three scorers reach double figures, but was unable to keep up with Big South Conference leader Campbell, falling by a 67-56 score on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams were efficient from the floor as Gardner-Webb (11-16, 6-10 Big South) shot 42.6 percent, going 20-for-47 from the floor, yet Campbell (21-6, 13-3 Big South) went 23-for-44, shooting at 54.5 percent. 

Tierra Huntsman led GWU with 14 points, going 4-for-9 from the floor, including 2-for-5 from long distance.  Alexus Hill had 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting, while Charlisa Jenkins added 10 points, going 5-for-9. 

Summer Price led the Camels offensively with 21 points on a 8-for-16 shooting performance. 

The two teams traded the lead six times in the first period, with the Runnin' Bulldogs leading by as many as three points early in the quarter at 5-2 with 8:25 on the clock after a three-pointer by Huntsman.  Campbell would lead by as much as four points with 2:26 remaining at 14-10, but free throw by Hill and a jumper by Huntsman would pull GWU within one point at 14-13 at the end of the frame. 

Gardner-Webb would reclaim the lead at the onset of the second period after a layup by Celia Tibbs with 9:34 on the clock gave the team a 15-14 edge.  The two teams would trade the lead three more times in the period, with Campbell building a four-point advantage with 1:28 remaining.  Huntsman would knock down a pair of free throws with 45 seconds on the clock to pull GWU within two points at 28-26 at the half.

Campbell would expand its lead to seven points at 35-28 with 5:19 to go in the third period, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would respond with a 11-4 run to tie the game at 39-39 with 2:22 on the clock after a pair of free throws by Huntsman.  Campbell would reclaim the lead on its next possession and would lead by three points with 25 seconds left in the quarter, yet a layup by Tibbs with six seconds left set the score at 44-43. 

The Camels would extend the lead to double digits with 2:04 remaining at 62-52 and would go on to win by eleven points at 67-56.
