No. 8 Gardner-Webb To Face No. 9 Winthrop in First Round of 2017 Big South Women’s Basketball Championship

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team will be the No. 8 seed in the 2017 Big South Women's Basketball Championship and will take on No. 9 seed Winthrop in the opening contest on Thursday evening at 6:00 pm in the Vines Center at Liberty University.

Gardner-Webb finished the 2016-17 regular season with an overall record of 11-18 and a league record of 6-12 to finish in eighth place.  Redshirt-junior guard Tierra Huntsman led the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game, earning honorable mention All-Big South honors in the process. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs took both regular season contests against Winthrop, who finished with a Big South record of 1-17.

On January 31st in Rock Hill, S.C., Huntsman scored 24 points on a 9-of-13 shooting performance to lead GWU to an 89-54 victory.  The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 45.7 percent for the game, also going 12-of-27 from behind the three-point line. 

The second meeting of the year between the two teams was much closer, as GWU was able to pull out a 63-57 win in Boiling Springs.  Huntsman led the way with 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

Both of the first round games on Thursday will be broadcast live on the Big South Network ( The 2017 Big South Women's Basketball Championship will continue with the quarterfinals on Friday, March 10th, semifinals on Saturday, March 11th and the Championship game on Sunday, March 12th with all three days airing live on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
