Bonus Points The Difference As Gardner-Webb Falls To Virginia, 22-18, In Friday Night Home Opener

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb and Virginia split Friday night's 10 individual bouts, with bonus points lifting the Cavaliers to a 22-18 win in Paul Porter Arena.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-2) fell behind 14-0 out of the gate, with Virginia (3-2) picking up a tech fall from #19 Jack Mueller at 125 pounds and a pin by #9 George DiCamillo (2:07) at 141 pounds to seize early control of the match.

Chris Vassar improved to 6-3 with a 2-0 decision at 149 pounds to get Gardner-Webb on the board, but the Cavaliers got a major decision from #19 Andrew Atkinson at 157 pounds to go up 18-3.

The Runnin' Bulldogs dominated as expected in the next three individual bouts, with #12 Tyler Marinelli coming alive for a 3-1 decision to improve his record to 5-1 on the young season.

Two-time NCAA qualifier Austin Trott – who moved up to 174 pounds this season – continued to perform at a high level. The Brunswick, Ga., senior pinned Ray Bethea in just 1:07 to get Gardner-Webb back into contention. It moved his record to 10-1 this season.

Hunter Gamble, ranked #20 nationally, followed with a 5-0 decision at 184 pounds to pull the 'Dogs within three points – 18-15 – with two weight classes remaining on the card.

Drew Barrett fought hard at 197 pounds, but Virginia's Chance McClure took a major decision on riding time to seal the team victory for the Cavaliers.

Boyce Cornwell, one of five former NCAA qualifiers in Gardner-Webb's lineup this season, rallied for a 6-4 overtime (SV-1) win at 285 pounds, getting a takedown to win the evening's final bout. Cornwell moved to 7-2 this season.

Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Friday, December 9, hosting VMI for the 2016-2017 Southern Conference opener. The match will begin at 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena, and will air live on The Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com).
