SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Redshirt senior Austin Trott was named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday morning.
Trott (Kingsland, Ga. / Camden County HS) was sensational during a busy clustering of SoCon matches last week, wrestling three conference opponents in five days at 174 pounds – going 3-0 with a pair of first-period falls.
Trott put Campbell's Herringshaw to the mat in just 2:28 on Friday night and followed by pinning The Citadel's Jason Carr in 1:29 less than 24 hours later on Saturday afternoon. He followed with another impressive effort on Tuesday night, upending 18th-ranked Nick Kee to even the team score at 13-13 on the road at nationally-ranked Appalachian State.
Trott's week pushed his season record to 15-1 overall and ran his win streak in league matches to 10 – dating back to a one-point loss on January 30, 2015. Trott has won 15 of his last 16 SoCon regular season bouts and has an 18-4 league mark for his career.
A two-time NCAA qualifier at 165 pounds, Trott has adjusted well to his new weight class. He has registered 86 career wins so far.
The SoCon Wrestler of the Week honor is the fourth of Trott's career – with one in each of his four seasons with the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb (5-4, 2-2 SoCon) will hit the road again this weekend, taking the long trek to SIU Edwardsville for a Saturday afternoon SoCon battle. GWU will take on 19th-ranked South Dakota State in a non-conference match later that afternoon (4:00 pm).
