CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb has six student-athletes ranked in the NCAA's wrestling RPI entering the 2017 Southern Conference Wrestling Championships on Saturday, marking a new program high.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will begin competition at The Citadel's McAlister Field House on Saturday morning at 10:00 am with a veteran lineup. GWU captured three berths to the NCAA Championships last season and saw one wrestler – current senior Austin Trott – win a SoCon title.

Boyce Cornwell (285) captured one of the SoCon's three allocations at his weight class and Chris Vassar (149) earned the program's first at-large berth to the Division I Championships.

All three wrestlers are back in an attempt to repeat and earn a trip to St. Louis, Mo., for this year's NCAA Championships.

Vassar, the No. 4 seed at 149 pounds entering the SoCon Championships, is 19-7 overall and 5-1 against league foes in 2016-2017. He is No. 19 in the NCAA's RPI entering the postseason.

Ryan Mosley, a 2015 NCAA qualifier, is the No. 4 seed this season at 157 pounds – and is ranked No. 32 by the NCAA RPI. Mosley, also a senior, is 23-10 overall this season (4-3 SoCon).

Gardner-Webb's Tyler Marinelli stepped in at 165 pounds with Trott moving up a weight class and has excelled. The redshirt sophomore is 16-5 overall (5-1 SoCon) and is ranked No. 22 in the RPI.

Trott (20-5, 6-1 SoCon) won't get a chance to defend his 165-pound title from last season, but will make a run at a third berth in the NCAA Championships. The Kingsland, Ga., native qualified at his previous weight in both 2014 and last season. Trott is ranked No. 20 in the NCAA RPI and is tied for the team lead – with Vassar – with five pins in 2016-2017.

Trott is the No. 2 seed this season at 174 pounds.

Another strong contender is senior Hunter Gamble (21-5, 5-2 SoCon), who qualified as a freshman in 2013 for the NCAA Championships. Gamble is the No. 3 seed in the 184-pound weight class this season, with the SoCon granted three allocations heading into this weekend. He is ranked No. 16 in the NCAA's latest RPI.

Senior heavyweight Boyce Cornwell has posted a 21-10 mark against a brutally tough schedule this season and is seeded No. 5 in one of the SoCon's most difficult weight classes. The Conyers, Ga., standout is also ranked No. 32 in the NCAA RPI and will attempt to battle his way to a second consecutive NCAA berth.
