Gamble Advances To Friday Action At 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Hunter Gamble advanced to Friday with a consolation round win, as Gardner-Webb sent three men into battle Thursday at the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

The Scottrade Center hosted the 330 top wrestlers in the nation – 33 at each of 10 weight classes – for the second time in three seasons.

Gamble, who dropped a 6-2 decision to 11th-seeded Emery Parker of Illinois in his debut bout Thursday, bounced back with a strong effort to advance into Friday's consolation round. He will take on 5th-ranked Zachary Zavatsky in the next round.

Gamble got an early takedown against Hoffman Thursday evening and held tight to a 3-2 lead – with riding time in his favor – after the first period. He pulled off a late reversal to go up 5-2 and used riding time for the final margin.

The Runnin' Bulldogs took the mat for the first time of the day at 157 pounds, with Ryan Mosley stepping up to face Nebraska's Tyler Berger – seeded fourth with a 32-4 record entering Thursday's action.

Berger took an early lead with a takedown and kept Mosley off the board until a late takedown – with the final 9-2 score sending Mosley into the consolation bracket.

Austin Trott had a rematch with North Carolina's Ethan Ramos at 174 pounds, with the 8th-seeded Ramos taking a narrow 4-2 decision over Trott in February's regular season bout.

Ramos went on the attack early, pulling off a pair of takedowns to surge in front. Trott escaped twice, but could not turn Ramos in the third period. Ramos pulled off a reversal late in the match – and secured riding time of the 9-2 decision.

Gamble kept it close against Parker of Illinois, but Parker used an early takedown to get himself into the lead. Gamble scored on a pair of escapes, but was unable to score a takedown in the third period after falling behind 3-2. Parker used another two-pointer and held riding time for the final 6-2 decision.

In Thursday night's consolation bracket, Mosley battled 13th-seeded John Van Brill in a low-scoring bout, narrowly missing a takedown in the first period. Van Brill scored on an escape for a 1-0 lead, but could not get anything going offensively – as the score remained the same until late in the third.

Mosley was awarded a takedown on a nice move with less than 10 seconds remaining in the match, but video review overturned the call after the final buzzer. Mosley was allowed four seconds on the clock after the review, but could not pull off a last-second score and fell in a heartbreaker.

Trott wrestled Edinboro's Ty Schoffstall in the 174-pound consolation bracket, with Schoffstall executing a quick takedown in the first period to go in front. Trott could not get on track offensively, with Schoffstall able to score on two more takedowns to create too much separation to overcome in a 9-2 decision.

Friday's action begins at 11:00 am ET with the consolation rounds continuing – with all matches live on ESPN3 ( Follow @GWUWrestling on twitter for updated mat assignments and match times as Gamble's showdown with Zavatsky approaches.
