BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Senior Justine Ibarra fired a shot past the keeper in the 94th minute to give Gardner-Webb a 1-0 victory over the visiting Highlanders of Radford in Saturday action.
Gardner-Webb improves to 6-7-2 (3-2-0 BSC), while Radford falls to 6-5-0 (4-1-0 BSC).
"Radford is an excellent team and we were fortunate to come away with the win," said head coach Mike Varga. "I think both teams got a bit fatigued and Justine [Ibarra] came up huge with an incredible individual effort to finish the game with her goal. I was pleased with how hard we worked for the duration of the match."
The first half was evenly matched by both teams as they combined for 13 total shots with three of those being on frame (Gardner-Webb had one, Radford had two). There were several fouls called that negated scoring chances on both sides, including on corner kicks that could've broken the scoreless draw.
Gardner-Webb saw an opportunity eight minutes into the second half, as Samuelle Grove had a chance when she found herself one-on-one with the keeper. She fired a shot wide right that Gardner-Webb could've broken the scoreless draw.
The rest of the half was fairly quiet as neither team was able to find the back of the net. Ibarra had a corner kick with less than 30 seconds left in the second half that was turned away by a stout Highlander defense and the match went into overtime.
The Runnin' Bulldogs found the back of the net four minutes into the overtime period, as Ibarra found herself one-on-one with the keeper, then placed a well-timed strike past the keeper for the 1-0 victory.
Gardner-Webb was led by Ibarra with the lone goal (four shot, one on frame), while Grove contributed four shots (one on net) and Brandi Arey also had three shots (one on goal). Radford was led Abby Gardner with three shots (two on goal) and Nicole Ray with two shots.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, October 12, as they travel to Asheville to take on UNC-Asheville in a battle of the bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
