BOILING SPRINGS – Brandi Arey and Samuelle Grove each added to their stellar seasons Wednesday night, scoring early goals to power Gardner-Webb to a 2-0 win over Charleston Southern.

The win for Gardner-Webb (9-7-2, 6-2-0 Big South) was its fifth in a row – and clinches a home field match in the upcoming Big South Conference quarterfinals. The win also keeps the Runnin' Bulldogs firmly in the mix for the league's regular season title.

"Obviously I am very pleased with how we came out of the gates," said head coach Mike Varga. "Defensively I thought it was another solid team effort and Keely had another solid night in goal.

"I liked our tempo in the attack and thought we did a good job creating chances. This team works very hard for each other and I am proud of our effort again tonight."

Grove struck quickly, with her goal coming in the third minute of action. The sophomore weaved her way through the Buccaneer defense before connecting on her fifth goal of the season for a 1-0 lead.

Arey scored her sixth goal of the season just a minute later, blistering a shot to the back of the net off a well-placed corner kick from classmate Justine Ibarra. With that tally, Gardner-Webb pushed its lead to 2-0 and never looked back.

The defense was key in the second half, as Charleston Southern (6-8-0, 2-4-0 Big South) could not get anything going in its hope to catch up.

Gardner-Webb kept pressure on itself, with several golden opportunities midway through the half – including one rocket off the cross bar that nearly made the score 3-0 in the 70th minute.

Gardner-Webb posted 28 shots in the match, outshooting the visiting Bucs by 18. A total of 12 Gardner-Webb shots were on frame.

Grove (five shots) and Arey (nine shots) led that charge, with Stine Kleppe (three shots) also pitching in heavily.

Keely Brown recorded her Big South-best seventh shutout of the season, making five saves in 90:00 minutes of action.

Charleston Southern got three shots each from Erica Gazzani and Anna Sells.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will attempt to keep their streak alive, closing out the regular season on Saturday night at home against Campbell.

The match will serve as Senior Night for Gardner-Webb's eight seniors, with kickoff set for 7:00 pm in Greene-Harbison Stadium.
