BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Campbell scored a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes Saturday night to top Gardner-Webb, 2-0, in the regular season finale for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb (9-8-2, 6-3-0 Big South) will host a quarterfinal match in the 2016 Big South Conference Tournament on Friday, October 28. Kickoff time will be determined once brackets are announced.
Gardner-Webb recognized its 2016 senior class before the match against Campbell. This year's class consisted of Sydney David (Acworth, GA), Justine Ibarra (Puyallup, WA), Brianna Nagle (Chesapeake, VA), Braddick Price (Huntington, WV), Jane Perrin Mayer (Gulfport, Miss), Jacqueline Kim (Chesapeake, VA), Brandi Arey (Huntersville, NC), and Kimberly Stout (Hendersonville, NC).
Defense was key in the first half, as both teams held strong and kept the match scoreless at the break.
Gardner-Webb keeper Keely Brown saved the three shots that she faced on target and kept the match scoreless.
Campbell revved up the offensive pressure in the second, maintaining possession in the Gardner-Webb half, which worked as the Camels broke the scoreless tie with less than 15 minutes remaining in the match. Anna Brantley found Alexa Genas waiting on a perfectly-timed cross, which Genas placed past a diving keeper.
Campbell doubled the margin just moments later. This time Ally Hopkins found herself on the end of a corner kick from Christine Kindt, which Hopkins struck past the keeper. Camels led 2-0, which proved to be the final margin.
