RADFORD, Va. – Sophomore Kaelyn Dyson (Holly Springs, N.C.) had a hand in seven blocks to go along with five kills as the Gardner-Webb volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Big South Conference foe Radford on Saturday afternoon.
Radford (16-3, 7-0 Big South) won the match by scores of 20-25, 25-13, 25-11, and 25-19, holding Gardner-Webb (10-10, 1-5 Big South) to a .043 hitting percentage and 31 kills, while attacking at a .206 clip with 50 kills.
Molly Johnston (Lubbock, Texas) led Gardner-Webb in kills with eight, followed by Dyson and Taylor Lillard (Victorville, Calif.) with five each. Lillard led the team in digs with 14, followed by Amanda Sahm (Marion, Iowa) with 12. Tinsley Fain (Boiling Springs, S.C.) led the team with 11 assists, followed by Sahm with 10.
Maddie Palmer led Radford in kills with 18, Kelby Jackson led the team with 25 digs, and Haley Kleespies led the Highlanders with 42 assists.
Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early 7-2 advantage in the opening set, highlighted by a pair of kills by Johnston. Radford would pull within two at 8-6, but that was as close as the Highlanders would get to the lead in the first set, with GWU pushing its advantage as high as seven points multiple times. The Runnin' Bulldogs would take the opening set, 25-20, following a smash by Lillard.
The second set began evenly for both squads, with the score being tied on four occasions, the last at 7-7 on a kill by Lillard. Radford would then take over the set, outscoring GWU by an 18-6 margin to claim set number two, 25-13, and tie the overall match score.
The Highlanders opened the third set on a 15-5 run, eventually taking the set by a score of 25-11.
The Runnin' Bulldogs started the fourth set with a 6-3 spurt, capped by an ace by Fain. Radford would answer back with a quick 5-0 run to take an 8-6 lead. The Highlanders would push their lead as high as 10 points at 20-10, but GWU would answer with an 8-1 burst highlighted by an ace by Milstead and kills by Dyson and Johnston to trim the lead to 21-18. Radford would respond with a 4-1 run to take the set, 25-19, and the overall match win.
