BOILING SPRINGS – Keira Moore (Spartanburg, S.C.) led Gardner-Webb with nine kills on the afternoon, yet GWU dropped a three-set decision to Big South Conference foe Campbell on Saturday.
Campbell (9-13, 4-4 Big South) took the match by scores of 25-20, 25-11, and 25-16, keeping Gardner-Webb (10-12, 1-7 Big South) to a hitting percentage of .115 and 30 kills, while attacking at a .277 percentage with 39 kills.
Moore led Gardner-Webb with nine kills, while Emma Milstead (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the team with 14 digs. Taylor Lillard (Victorville, Calif.) led GWU with three blocks, and Tinsley Fain (Boiling Springs, S.C.) tallied 18 assists to lead the squad.
Campbell was led by Allena Heath with 10 kills, Kayla Schanback with 14 digs, Madison Linxwiler with three blocks, and Rebecca Ramirez with 19 assists.
Action was balanced throughout the first set of play, as there were 13 ties and seven lead changes between the two squads. Campbell jumped out to a 13-10 lead, but the Runnin' Bulldogs answered with a quick 5-2 spurt to tie the set at 15-15, highlighted by kills from Nicole Celarek (Bensenville, Ill.) and Kaelyn Dyson (Holly Springs, N.C.). The Camels would again jump out to a 20-17 lead, yet GWU tallied three consecutive points, highlighted by back to back kills from Hannah Driscoll (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Lillard to tie the match at 20-20. Campbell would respond with longest run of the set, scoring the final five points to claim the first set 25-20.
The second set began much like the first, with three lead changes and eight ties early on, but Campbell rattled off six consecutive points to take a 15-8 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs would earn kills from Dyson and Tyra Long (Tampa, Fla.), but the Camels pulled away to take a 25-11 set win.
Campbell opened up the third set with a 7-2 run which was broken up by a smash from Driscoll. The Runnin' Bulldogs had two stretches of three or more consecutive points in the frame, scoring three straight to pull within 12-8 after a kill by Molly Johnston (Lubbock, Texas), and four straight to set the score at 23-16, capped by a Charissa Coleman (Matthews, N.C.) ace. Campbell would score the final two points to take the 25-16 set win and to seal the overall match decision.
