One of the most electrifying men to step onto the turf at Spangler Stadium, Terry Guess re-wrote the Gardner-Webb record books very quickly during his time in Boiling Springs. He earned All-America honors in 1994 after returning an NCAA Division II record six kicks – three punts and three kickoffs – for touchdowns. That record still stands 21 seasons later. Guess had three more touchdown returns called back in 1994, and led the nation with a 19.5 yards per return average on punts. His kick return exploits were supplemented by four rushing touchdowns and another receiving score that season. He was also named first-team All-South Atlantic Conference and All-Region as a return specialist in 1994. Guess averaged 13.5 yards per reception in his two seasons with the Runnin’ Bulldogs and still holds the school record with a pair of 100-yard kickoff returns – vs. SAC rivals Carson-Newman and Mars Hill. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 1996 NFL Draft by New Orleans and became the first Gardner-Webb draft pick to catch a touchdown pass in the NFL when he hauled in a 57-yard score vs. Atlanta on December 8, 1996 in the Superdome.
