October 13, 2006 | Football
MIAMI, Fla. - Former Gardner-Webb University standout Jim
Maxwell signed with the Miami Dolphins on October 11, and will suit
up for Nick Saban's squad on Sunday against the New York Jets.
Maxwell, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound linebacker, will be with his third
NFL team after spending seasons with the New York Giants (2004) and
San Francisco 49ers (2005). The Johnsonville, S.C., native was
playing well with 49ers this past preseason, but was injured on the
final day of training camp and released on September 8 by that
club.
He led the 49ers in tackling through its first two preseason games
this year, and had 21 total tackles last season in 11 games -
including 14 hits and a fumble recovery on special teams. Maxwell
played with the New York Giants in 14 games as a rookie in 2004,
registering 18 total tackles and a sack with 11 of those hits
coming on special teams.
A two-time All-Big South selection for Gardner-Webb and a 2002
Division I-AA All-American (FB Gazette), Maxwell finished his
career in Boiling Springs with 306 tackles, 11 fumble recoveries
and 10 sacks at linebacker and safety. Maxwell had 116 hits as a
senior in 2003 and registered 15 tackles for loss and 10
quarterback pressures as well - leading Gardner-Webb to an 8-4
record and its second Big South Conference title.
Maxwell will wear jersey No. 53 for the Dolphins and is expected to
play primarily on special teams this week, according to the
Miami Herald. The Dolphins and Jets will
kick off Sunday at 4:15 pm ET on CBS.
