GWU Wins Battle of the Bulldogs, 1-0
October 23, 2006 | Men's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - On a frigid Monday night, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs shutout the UNCA Bulldogs 1-0 in the Battle of the Bulldogs. The non-conference match was originally scheduled for August 30 but was postponed due to rain and lightning.
The win moves the Bulldogs to 7-6-3 overall, while UNCA falls to 5-11-2.
Gardner-Webb continues to play well and find ways to win as over their last seven matches they have gone 6-0-1.
From the beginning GWU controlled the pace of the match as the 'Dogs outshot UNCA 10-2 in the first half.
The lone goal of the game came by way of senior Jamie Miller at the 27.44 mark, who fittingly scored his second goal of the season on Senior Night with this one coming on a penalty kick.
Sophomore Chris Salvaggione was pulled down in the box by a UNCA defender while trying to find space to take a shot. With the Bulldogs 0 for 2 on penalty kicks this season, Coach Setzer elected Miller to take the kick. The senior from Garden City, MI put the ball enroute to the lower left hand corner of the box, where the UNCA keeper Michael Pereira got a hand on it, but could not slow it down as the ball rolled past the goalline and into the net.
The Bulldog defense would once again step up to the challenge, as they held the UNCA offense to five shots on goal and a total of 11 shots for the game.
Senior Tyler Kettering, playing in his last home game, picked up his fifth shutout on the season, as he stopped five shots for the match. However, none was more important than the diving save he made right in front of the left post, knocking the ball down and coralling it with only 31 seconds remaining in the game.
UNCA's keeper Pereira had 10 saves as he faced a relentless GWU offense that fired 18 shots for the game.
Gardner-Webb will wrap up their 2006 regular season play on Wednesday night, October 25, when they will travel to Cary, N.C. to face off with the ACC's N.C. State Wolfpack. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m.
