GAME NOTES: Gardner-Webb vs. VMI on Saturday in Spangler Stadium
October 26, 2006 | Football
BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb returns home to face a much
improved VMI team on Saturday at 1:30 pm ET, as part of Homecoming
2006 on campus.
The Bulldogs (5-2, 1-0 Big South) are coming off a rousing 27-24
comeback win at Liberty, with kicker Hunter Smith booting a pair of
fourth quarter field goals to spark that win. Smith and quarterback
Devin Campbell - who threw for 267 yards and two scores in the
final two quarters - were named Big South Players of the Week at
their respective positions last Monday.
VMI (1-7, 0-2 Big South) has battled injuries all season, but the
Keydets are healthy now - and have given fits to both of the
preseason Big South favorites in back-to-back weeks. VMI had a lead
with less than a minute to play against No. 24 Coastal Carolina two
weeks ago, only to drop a 31-27 decision after a late touchdown
pass with 18 seconds left by the Chants. The Keydets gave
Charleston Southern fits on the road last week, but a blocked punt
return for a score doomed the visitors, 27-22.
Expect a battle between the Bulldogs and Keydets on Saturday, as
all three games in the series have been tight - including last
year's 55-52 triple overtime thriller that Gardner-Webb won in
Lexington.
