October 30, 2006 | Football
CHARLOTTE - Gardner-Webb quarterback Devin Campbell and running
back David Montgomery each earned Big South Conference weekly
awards after clutch efforts Saturday in the win over VMI.
Campbell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton HS) captured the Big
South / Choice Hotels Offensive Player of the Week honor for the
second game in a row after leading his fourth comeback of the
season in the fourth quarter for the 'Dogs.
The 6-foot-4, 188-pound sophomore engineered a 12-play, 80-yard
drive by completing 5-of-8 passes for all 80 yards and the
game-winning touchdown - a five-yard toss to Duvaughn Flagler -
with 3:05 to play in the 35-31 victory. Campbell brought GWU back
from a 16-7 deficit early in the third quarter as well and pitched
for three touchdown passes in the final 30 minutes, including the
game-winner. He threw touchdown passes of four and 44 yards to Kory
Alston in the third quarter.
Campbell finished the day by completing 21-of-34 passes for 279
yards, with 223 of those yards coming in the final two quarters of
action. The first-year starter - one of 39 freshmen or sophomores
on Gardner-Webb's two-deep this week - has passed for a career-high
1,591 yards and 12 touchdowns so far this season.
Montgomery (Sugar Hill, Ga. / North Gwinnett HS) also earned his
second Freshman of the Week honor from the league office, carrying
15 times for 103 yards and a 34-yard touchdown against the
Keydets.
The 5-foot-7, 155-pound speedster also caught an 18-yard pass in
the game, finishing with a career-best 121 all-purpose yards on the
afternoon. Montgomery, who rushed for 96 yards in GWU's comeback
win at Southeastern Louisiana, leads the Bulldogs in rushing so far
this season - and is averaging a solid 6.0 yards per carry.
Montgomery's 73-yard run at Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 30 is
the longest non-scoring run in Big South Conference history.
Gardner-Webb (6-2, 2-0 Big South) faces its stiffest road challenge
to date on Saturday, Nov. 4, as the Bulldogs venture to Charleston,
S.C., to battle undefeated Charleston Southern (8-0, 1-0 Big South)
in a key league matchup. The Bucs are ranked No. 18 nationally this
week by the Football Gazette.
Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm ET, and will be broadcast live by
WGWG-FM (88.3).
