BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb has another tough task at hand on
Tuesday night, as the Runnin' Bulldogs open their home schedule
with Southern Conference North Division favorite UNC Greensboro at
8 pm ET in Paul Porter Arena.
GWU (0-3) has had its hands full of late, falling on the road at
Texas Tech, Akron and No. 2 North Carolina. Still, Coach Rick
Scruggs' squad has four players averaging in double figures - with
Ricky McPhee (10.7 ppg), Chris Gash (10.4 ppg), Jake Sims (10.3
ppg) and Takayo Siddle (10 ppg) each scoring well at various stages
of the season's opening week. Thomas Sanders (9.3 ppg / 6.3 rpg has
also gotten solid minutes early for GWU off the bench.
The 'Dogs must get more efficient on offense, where a .347 shooting
percentage and an average of 18.7 turnovers per game has hampered
the team's consistency scoring the ball.
UNC Greensboro (0-4) hasn't ducked any top-shelf competition
either, falling at Marshall (Conference USA), at Penn State (Big
Ten), Duke (ACC) and at home against East Carolina in a murderous
seven-day stretch to open their season.
The Spartans have to high-major players in post man Kyle Hines
(22.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg) and guard Ricky Hickman (10.8 ppg), and are an
experienced bunch throughout the roster. UNCG has also struggled
shooting the basketball (35.7 percent overall) and, like GWU, has
turned it over at an unusual rate (17.0 turnovers per game).
Opening tip is scheduled for 8 pm ET, as part of a doubleheader
with the GWU women's team. The GWU women will face South Carolina
State at 6 pm ET on Tuesday night.
