Gardner-Webb Cruises Past Ferrum, 70-53, For First Win
November 29, 2006 | Men's Basketball
BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb took ownership of the paint and
the glass Wednesday night, rolling past Ferrum, 70-53, for its
first win of the season.
Thomas Sanders came off the bench to score 12 points and pulled
down a career-high 13 rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting, and Chris Gash
netted 13 points to pace the Runnin' Bulldogs (1-5), who shot 51.7
percent as a team in the first half.
The 'Dogs owned a 50-31 edge on the glass, including 15 offensive
caroms - and scored 44 points in the paint against the overmatched
Panthers (3-3). In addition to Sanders and Gash, GWU had three
other players - Ricky McPhee, Auryn MacMillan and Clint Graham
score eight points. Graham's point total and five rebounds marked
career-highs for the 6-foot-8 junior.
Gardner-Webb could not shake its turnover bug, coughing up the
basketball 16 times - and made just 9-of-19 free throws to derail
any chance of a complete blowout.
Ferrum got a game-high 17 points from forward Keith Harris, and saw
leading scorer Cedric Jones supply 13 points and five rebounds. The
Panthers shot just 32.8 percent from the field, and made only four
of 25 three-point attempts.
Gardner-Webb will return to its brutal road schedule on Tuesday,
Dec. 5, traveling to face SEC East contender Georgia at 7:00 pm ET
in Athens. The game will be televised live on CSS (Comcast Sports
Southeast).
