December 08, 2006 | Men's Basketball
BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb University will return home to
host Western Carolina on Saturday at 7 pm ET in Paul Porter Arena,
and the athletics department and Salvation Army are teaming up for
the final home game of 2006.
Any fans who bring a new toy for a child or canned goods will be
admitted for free as part of a joint benefit for the Salvation Army
and Toy Closet.
Gardner-Webb (1-6) will look to bounce back after suffering a 96-67
loss at Georgia on Tuesday night, with guard Ricky McPhee (12.9
ppg) and forward Chris Gash (12.4 ppg) leading the way offensively.
Both McPhee and Gash had 12 points in Athens Tuesday night.
Western Carolina (4-2) has lost only to Purdue and Xavier this
season, and are led by high-scoring guard Antonio Russell (15.8
ppg) and two other players - Nick Aldridge and Jake Robinson - in
double figures. The Catamounts last played on Dec. 2, losing 95-61
at Xavier, giving the visitors a full seven days of preparation for
Gardner-Webb. Russell led Western Carolina with 20 points against
the Muskateers.
GWU topped Western Carolina in overtime last season, 90-83, in
Cullowhee. McPhee had 18 points in that meeting, including a
6-of-10 effort from three-point range. That game was the first on
the hardwood between the 'Dogs and Catamounts since the 1991-1992
season.
