September 28, 2006 | Men's Soccer
Macon, Ga. - The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season Thursday night, blanking Mercer 1-0 in both teams Atlantic Sun Conference opener.
The win moves Gardner-Webb to 1-5-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference, while Mercer falls to 2-7-1 and 0-1-0.
The match proved to be a very competitive and well-balanced game, as the Bulldog defense was solid throughout, surrendering only nine shots by the Bear's offense for the entire 90 minutes.
Sophomore Jarrett Jackson scored the game winning goal late in the first half, giving him his first goal of the season. The goal came at the 41:09 mark, when Richard Godfrey played a ball through the Bear defense, setting up Jackson who put a shot to the far post and into the net. The assist by Godfrey gives him four assists for the year.
Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Tyler Kettering would collect three stops enroute to his first shutout of the season.
The Bulldogs outshot the Bears for the match 13-9, with three of those shots put on frame.
GWU will be on the road again this Saturday, September 30, when they will face off with Stetson in Deland, Fla. The gametime is set for 7 p.m.
