
Bulldogs Fall to Hatters 3-2 in Extra Frames

Deland, Fla. - On Saturday, the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team lost its first conference game of the season, falling on the road to Stetson, 3-2 in doubled overtime.
The action took off in the second half with the Hatters striking first taking the lead 1-0 off in the 70th minute when Sean Marshall put a header into the left corner of the goal off of a cross from Ben Dyon.
With the time winding down in regulation, the Bulldogs would answer with a pair of goals of their own late in the second period. Freshman Boris Gatzky evened up the score at 1-1, when he capitalized on a deflection in front of the goal.
Then just over a minute later, with only 13:50 minutes remaining in the game, Richard Godfrey gave a 2-1 lead to the 'Dogs, when he beat his defender down the right side and put a shot past the Stetson goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
However, in the 89th minute the Hatters' sophomore Kirk Labusch beat his defender and put a shot past GWU keeper Tyler Kettering, to notch the score up at 2-2 and send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period neither team could get their offense going, as only one shot was taken between the two teams.
However, early in the second overtime period, in the 103rd minute Stetson's Rudy Mehren put a header off a free kick from Ben Dyon into the net, giving the Hatters a 3-2 win.
Stetson improves to 2-8-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Gardner-Webb falls to 1-6-2 (1-1-0).
