Lady Netters Dropped by No. 32 NC State in Season Opener

Raleigh, N.C. –The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team opened up their 2007 spring season on January 21 with a very tough opponent right from the start as they took on the No. 32 nationally ranked Lady Wolfpack of NC State.
The Lady Bulldogs fought hard but were just overmatched, falling to the Pack, 6-1.
Junior Carol Pancia picked up the point for the Lady Bulldogs defeating the Wolfpack's Allison Barry in a third set tiebreaker 11-9.
In doubles play, the duo of Amy Beavers and Laura Kriett fell at the No. 1 spot to Guerra and Petrovic of NCSU, 8-1. At the No. 2 spot, Kasey Ellis and Monica Walser of GWU were dropped by NC State's Bleakley and by the same score of 8-1. At the No. 3 spot the tandem of Jenny Gomez and Carol Pancia were shutout by the Wolfpack's Barry and Arechavelta.
In singles play the Wolfpack took five of the six bouts with Pancia's win being the lone win for the Bulldogs. Beavers fought hard from a 6-1 defeat at the No. 5 slot only to fall in the second set, 7-6. Kriett, Walser, Ellis, and Gomez all fell in straight sets on the day.
The Lady Bulldogs (0-1) will face off with UNC-Wilmington at 2 p.m. today in Raleigh as part of the NC State Invitational.
