Bulldogs Set for Conference Home Opener Against Bruins

The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team is set for their first home
conference game of the season. The Bulldogs will host the Belmont
Bruins this Friday night at Varsity Field. The game is set to
kick-off at 7PM.
The Bulldogs will be looking for some home support after coming off
two road-trip losses to begin the conference. If you remember, the
Bulldogs did not fair too well at the beginning of last year's
season either, but they bounced back. This year's team is just as
talented; so don't hang your head just yet. The Bulldogs just need
that first W to get them started. It is also important to know that
Gardner-Webb has dropped seven of their last nine games by only two
goals or less.
The Belmont Bruins will be a tough matchup for the Bulldogs. The
Bruins come into town with three wins and two ties in their last
five games. In those five games, Belmont has only given up three
goals and has shutout their last two opponents. Belmont's goalie,
Ron Gravely, hasn't allowed a goal in 252:58.
On offense, Belmont is not afraid to take chances where other teams
may not. The Bruins have taken 46 shots in their last two games
alone. Of those 46 shots, only 15 have been on goal. Despite the
many shot attempts, the Bruins are only averaging one goal per game
this season. Although handing out two shutouts in as many games,
they were shutout in those games as well.
Last season the Bulldogs went to Belmont and beat the Bruins on the
road 1-0. You can bet that Belmont remembers that loss, and will
look to come out and return the favor against the defending
conference tournament champions.
