Bulldogs Beat Up Bears, 1-0

The Bulldogs gain their first road win of the season Saturday
night at Mercer. The Bulldogs beat the Bears, 1-0. Jordan Gaines
scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs, and their defense did the
rest. The Bulldogs go to 2-12-1 for the season, and 2-5 in the
A-Sun.
Defense controlled the first half of play for both teams. The two
teams combined for 11 shots total, only two of them were on frame.
Mercer tried pushing the ball up the field, but Gardner-Webb's back
line caught the Bears with five offsides penalties in the first
half.
Gardner-Webb's T.J. Fox had two saves in the first half to keep the
Bears scoreless heading into halftime. Gardner-Webb took five shots
in the first half, none of which were on goal. The Bulldogs and
Bears went into halftime tied 0-0.
The Bulldogs intensity went up in the second half as they came out
looking for their first road win of the season. Zach Burkett pushed
the ball up the wing and sent a cross into the box. After a touch
by Bradley Morrison, Jordan Gaines one-timed the ball into the back
of the net. Gaines' second goal of the season put the Bulldogs on
top 1-0. Both Burkett and Morrison were credited with an assist on
the play.
The rest of the match was controlled by Gardner-Webb's defense. The
Bulldogs' defense only allowed one shot on goal after Gaines' goal.
With the defense playing well and Fox stopping all of Mercer's
shots on frame, the Bulldogs went on the win the game 1-0. The win
gave the Bulldogs their first road win of the season and takes them
to 2-5 in the A-Sun.
Gardner-Webb's next game will be at home against Stetson. The game
is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 26th, at 7 p.m.
