
Bulldogs Drop A-Sun Match To Mercer

MACON, Ga. Despite fighting hard for 90 minutes, Mercer netted two first-half goals to knock off the visiting Gardner-Webb Bulldogs Thursday evening by a 2-0 score in an A-Sun match-up.
The Bulldogs fall to 6-10 overall and 4-5 in league play. The Bears improve to 10-5-1 on the year and 8-1 in A-Sun competition.
GWU's Lindsey Gladhill tallied the first shot on goal in the contest, coming at the 8:01 mark. However, jean Worts recorded the save. In the 11th minute of play, Kacie Hudson fired a shot from 30 yards out that went through the hands of Sarah Wyszynski for a 1-0 lead. Kaelyn Horton was credited with an assist on the play.
At the 14:03 mark, head coach Kevin Mounce switched goalkeepers, going to rookie Ashley Scott.
GWU's Brittany Woods took the next shot on goal for GWU in the 32nd minute, but once again it was saved by Worts. In the final minute before the half, the home squad tallied an insurance goal. Meghan Castaldo received a pass from Hudson off a free kick, then volleyed it home for the 2-0 lead.
In the second half, the Bulldogs out-shot the visitors by a 7-5 margin, including five of which were on goal. However, Worts was up to every challenge GWU presented.
For the match, GWU was out-shot 12-11. However, the Bulldogs tallied seven shots on frame versus four for the Bears. Gladhill posted five shots on goal while Woods and sophomore Samantha Cawkell accounted for the other two.
Mercer had the offensive pressure, racking up six corner kicks to just one for GWU. It was a physical contest as 27 fouls were called, but just 10 were whistled against Mounce's team.
Wyszynski just played 14:03 before being pulled for Scott. While each allowed a goal, Scott came up with the only two saves on the night for GWU. Worts compiled a shutout and seven saves.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday at Kennesaw State.
Game-time is slated for 7 p.m.
