
Tate Earns Third-Place Finish At East Stroudsburg Open

STROUDSBURG, Pa. Rob Tate garnered a third-place finish at the East Stroudsburg Open Saturday afternoon to earn the Gardner-Webb wrestling team's top billing at the very competitive meet.
At 125, Cortney Roberts posted a 5-3 victory over Will Sharbaugh in the opening round and an 8-2 win over Kellen Aura in the second round of the competition. He triumphed over John Trumbetti when Trumbetti had to forfeit due to an injury. In the quarterfinals, Roberts fell to Brandon Kinney 5-3.
Tate advanced to the semifinals in the winner's bracket before succumbing to Lehigh's Matthew Fisk by way of a pin at 2:31. Tate rebounded in the consolation bracket to pin Matt Bonson in just 32 seconds to garner his third-place finish.
Tate shut out John Pauling 5-0 to start the tournament before pinning Nick Serritella in 3:00 in the second round. In the third round, he downed Anthony Valles by a 9-3 margin. He then advanced to face Fisk as Matt Swallow had to retire due to a medical injury.
Chad Davis began the competition in the 174 class in a solid way, shutting out Zachery Stosius 13-0. He continued his hot streak as he took down Tom McCauley by a 5-0 score in the second round. However, he fell to A.J. Brentzel in the next round by a 2-1 margin.
