
Gardner-Webb Dominates Davidson Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. The Gardner-Webb swim team got out to a hot start on day one of the Davidson Invitational and didn't let up, winning the meet that was essentially a partial preview of the CCSA Championship.
The 800 free relay team began the meet with a second-place finish, touching the wall in a season-best time of 7:40.35. The quartet of Elizabeth Ketterer, Kelly Gueltig, Grace Whiteside and Heather Roka's time was also good enough to end up fifth on the school's all-time list.
Ketterer then raced out to a 1,650 free championship in the very next event with a top time of the season in 17:14.65 for the Bulldogs. It also marked the fourth-fastest time in school history. Just behind her was Roka, who finished in 17:16.11. Grace Whiteside and Kelly Gueltig's 11th and 12th-place finishes, respectively, were also two of the top four times on the season for GWU.
On the second day of competition, the foursome of Corey Hughey, Rachel Warkentin, Stepheni Stadnik and Whitney Hooley garnered a time of 1:38.02, which was good enough for second place in addition to being third on the all-time list for the 200 free relay.
A trio of Bulldogs placed in the top five of the 200 fly, with Roka taking second in 2:09.62, Leslie Hallquist in third (2:10.90) and Carrie Kibler in fifth (2:12.32). All three times were the fastest for a GWU swimmer this season.
Ketterer again earned a top-five showing with her third-place effort in the 200 free in a time of 1:55.50. Roka, Whiteside and Warkentin all took a spot in the finals, with Roka placing fifth, Whiteside sixth and Warkentin eighth.
Stadnik continued her solid weekend by taking second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.65. However, her preliminary time of 1:07.07 established a school record. Warkentin took fourth in 1:09.08. Her preliminary time of 1:08.85 was good enough for eighth on the career chart for GWU.
Hooley reached the finals in the 100 back and placed second, touching the wall in 58.46. Hughey and Sarah Steadman were right behind her, finishing in 58.56 and 59.45, respectively, for third and fourth.
Roka and Ketterer went back-to-back in the 400 IM, earning fifth and sixth place, respectively. Roka had a season-best time of 4:37.59 while Ketterer finished in 4:39.27.
Hughey, Warkentin and Stadnik all claimed spots in the finals, gobbling up the majority of the points that were available in the event. Hughey was fourth in 24.53 while Warkentin was sixth (24.91) and Stadnik was seventh (24.94).
In the 400 medley, the quartet of Hooley, Stadnik, Warkentin and Hughey teamed up to take the title and 40 team points. Their time of 3:56.30 was good enough for the fourth-best time in school history in addition to it being the top time of the year for GWU thus far.
The 200 medly relay team of Hooley, Stadnik, Warkentin and Hughey recorded a Davidson Invitational record time of 1:49.41 en route to its first-place finish.
In the 200 back, Hooley was just off her school-record time, finishing in second after touching the wall in 2:05.17. Steadman posted a personal-best time of 2:08.87, garnering a fourth-place finish. Her time is also the fourth fastest in school history. Whiteside was right behind Steadman, taking fifth with a time of 2:10.90.
Ketterer continued to make the climb up the GWU record book list. In her 500 free win, Ketterer posted a time of 5:03.18, which is the fifth-fastest time in school history. Roka took third in the event (5:06.68) while Gueltig placed seventh (5:15.14).
Warkentin nearly took down a school record with her 100 fly time of 58.84. The third-place finish was the second-fastest mark in school history. Hooley was fifth in 59.51.
Stadnik's time of 2:26.03 in the 200 breast was good enough for third at the meet in addition to fifth in the GWU record book. Isabel Olivas took sixth with a time of 2:28.60.
Ketterer was back in action, re-writing the record book in the 100 free. She placed third in the event with a personal-best time of 53.79. It's the third-fastest time in school history. Hughey's time of 54.42 was good enough for fifth place. However, her preliminary time of 53.83 was a personal-best time and the fourth-fastest mark in school history.
Steadman took second in the 200 IM with a personal-best time and the fifth-fastest time in GWU history of 2:10.75.
In the final event of the meet, the GWU quartet of Ketterer, Hughey, Hooley and Gueltig recorded a second-place finish with a time of 3:36.64.
The Bulldogs now have off until a Jan. 5 meet against FAMU and Georgia Southern. The meet will begin at noon in Statesboro, Ga.
