Bulldogs Fall On The Road To S.C. State
November 28, 2007 | Women's Basketball
ORANGEBURG, S.C. A furious second-half rally could not help the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team come back from a 12-point halftime deficit as the Bulldogs fell to S.C. State by a 62-56 score Tuesday evening.
GWU drops to 2-5 on the season while SCSU improves to 1-4 on the young year.
GWU was led by Monique Hudson's 12 points off the bench as the rookie hit 6-of-10 from the floor. However, she fouled out in just 21 minutes of play. Hudson was the only Bulldog to reach double figures, but her twin sister, Dominique Hudson, canned nine in the losing effort. Redshirt-sophomore Sherika Montgomery had eight points.
Sophomore Margaret Roundtree pulled down 10 boards to lead the way, seven of which were on the defensive end of the court.
GWU shot better than the opposition, 37.3 percent to 34.5 percent, but the home squad bested the Bulldogs from the charity stripe. SCSU drained 19-of-23 attempts from the charity stripe while GWU converted just four-of-eight.
The Bulldogs also struggled behind the arc, hitting just 2-of-21 attempts for the night.
GWU took an early 5-4 lead on a lay-up by Jessica Bryant and again took a one-point advantage on a Latroya Pope jumper with 16:45 to play at 9-8. However, it would be the last lead for the Bulldogs in the opening half.
SCSU went on an 8-2 run over the next six minutes of action and stayed up the rest of the half. The home team went up by 16 with just 1:43 to play in the half off a Brittany Baity foul shot. SCSU led 34-22 at the intermission.
Head coach Rick Reeves' team battled back though in the final period, storming out of the gate. GWU went on an 18-4 run over the first 7:36 of the half to go ahead 40-38. However, the lead did not last long as SCSU re-took the lead at the 11:05 mark on a tip-in by Jenell Moore, 43-41.
As SCSU went up six with just under 10 to play, the Bulldogs sliced into the lead once more, eventually taking a 51-50 lead with 5:33 to play on a jumper by Monique Hudson.
The teams battled back and forth over the next four minutes as GWU had its final advantage of the night with 1:28 to play, 56-55. However, SCSU would post the final seven points of the match as the young Bulldogs missed two lay-ups. Laura Povilonyte also fouled Sophilia Hipps in the act of shooting down the stretch, and Hipps made the bucket and the charity toss for an old-fashioned three-point play.
The Bulldogs will look to end their two-game losing skid this
weekend as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to take part in the Cornell
Tournament. GWU will square off with Cornell at 7 p.m., Friday
night.
